Across the UK over a million people volunteer in sport and physical activity each year.
They fill roles like coaching, club management, events volunteering, grounds people, score keepers, administrators and a variety of other roles. You don't need to be sporty to be a sport volunteer - clubs need all sort of support.
VAL also runs a number of projects to support people into sports and activity volunteering.
Leicester City Football Club Academy ‘Real World’ Volunteering Project
We have worked with Leicester City FC to source and set up a number of ‘Real World’ volunteering opportunities for their Academy team. These opportunities provide hands-on work experience and the opportunity to see what day to day life is like for those not destined for a future in high performance sport.
Opportunities so far have included a day with the ‘Way of the Horse’ and an ongoing monthly placement for 2-3 academy players in an Action Homeless central food bank. This ongoing placement is set to continue with the new academy team, and they will have three additional ‘one-off’ days with charities based in Leicester and Leicestershire.
Active Youth Centre
The Active Youth Centre Project, funded by Leicestershire and Rutland Sport and Leicester City Council, is a project designed to encourage the participation of young people in sport through recruiting and training volunteers to place in city-based youth centres.
These volunteers will plan and deliver semi-structured sport session at independent and council-run youth centres at various locations around the city, and will receive full training from StreetGames. This project aims to increase activity and improve health among young people (teenagers), specifically those from Black and Minority Ethnic Groups and those living in areas of deprivation.
Fun with Mum
The Fun with Mum Project, funded by Leicestershire and Rutland Sport and Leicester City Council, aims to recruit and train female volunteers to run free or low-cost activity sessions where other mums can participate alongside their young children. In doing so, this project aims to increase activity and improve health among women & girls and young people (children aged 0-5 years) in and around Leicester City.
Volunteers will be supported to set up a number of ‘Fun with Mum’ activity groups across the city, where each group will meet on a weekly basis to take part in informal, fun sport/exercise sessions, either in their local park, community centre or other public space.
Our sport volunteering team would be happy to help.
